This morning we went to the market in Yangon. It is housed in an old, historical building with some wonderful details. And there was lots of variety and colorful goods…woven items, jewelry, including precious stones, wood carvings, marionettes, etc..
…and outside some beautifully presented veggies…
We then went to the National Museum with some wonderful displays; in particular, the actual throne used by the last ruling dynasty. (no cameras allowed in the museum). The throne had been dismantled and sent to India before World War II which saved it, as the Mandalay Palace was destroyed in that war. Myanmar then asked India to return it.
Now it was lunch time, so we headed to an authentic Myanmar restaurant…
…what a fabulous place….this was just the display of the condiments…
…there was quite a selection of Myanmar curry dishes, so we chose a few dishes to share. It was fabulous. Myanmar curry is milder than other forms of curry, having a different taste entirely.
As the temperature was hovering above 40 degrees Celsius, we took a midday break from the heat, before heading to the Chinese quarter…
I tried both of these fruits…(missed the name of this one)
But this one was called mangosteen…
This neighborhood also has a scattering of historic buildings…
…although some of them have already been replaced over the years. There was also a Chinese temple….
….where the guide explained that the Chinese practice a different form of Buddhism.
We then went to another great restaurant where we had fresh whole fish, shrimp, and fresh cooked veggies. My experiences with the food so far are much better than my last visit here.
Tomorrow I head up to Mandalay.
