>Day 88. Iguazu Falls, Brazil

>Today we flew up to Iguazu on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Upon landing at the airport in Argentina, we headed to the Brazil side of the falls, for which we had obtained a Brazilian visa. My passport did hold us up for a few moments (probably because of the pages added…maybe she had not seen that before–she took my passport over to confer with someone else before finally letting us through).

We had heard that the best views were from the Brazil side. And the falls were definitely awesome!

Now, you may at this point say Ho-hum, but…..this is only one small part of the falls. It goes on…

…and on…

…and on…

…this was our first view of devils throat, the primary falls over which about half of the volume flows…

…the falls continue on for a total of three kilometers. It is wider than Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, however, it consists of 275 separate falls, while Victoria Falls has the longest continuous curtain of water. Iguazu’s average annual flow is second only to Niagara Falls.

There was a walkway that went along the Brazil side where you could view the falls across the river on the Argentinian side….

then there was a catwalk (similar to the one at Niagara where you need your rain poncho…(I had mine wrapped around my camera :-)…

And it took you to a place where the falls were above you…

…beside you…

…and under you.

The rainbows were quite cool…

Then we went up to an observation deck for a higher view…

It was quite spectacular!

We then headed back to our hotel, Pasado Puerto Bemberg…a small place with 13 rooms, jungle walks, and river excursions. For our first night we were the only guests!! (it is off season), and so we enjoyed the total attention of the chef, who was excellent.

Most people stay at the Sheraton which is located within the actual park, but we were thrilled that we had discovered this little gem.

Tomorrow we will check out the falls from the Argentina side!
